Can I use woochips in a gas barbeque?

I have just bought a gas barbeque and I am a total novice with such things. I would like to add woodchips to reproduce the effect of a charcoal grill, but I don't know if this is possible or if there are any drawbacks (such as mess?). I wonder if anyone can advise me?
