"Should the process of judicial appointment be altered to involve community consultation"?

No. If you do, then you start involving more politics in the judicial system than what it has now. In theory, the justices are suppose to be above politics, and rule on the laws, not public opinion. In reality, though, we all know there are some politics involved in the judicial system, but let's not add any more to it.
