What is wrong with being Moderate?

I've seen many people ociated with the GOP verbally lashing out against members of their own party who claim to be moderate. Doesn't that mean they prefer to govern from a popular stance? Isn't that the point of being an elected official? I thought they were supposed to govern from the standpoint that is the most popular among the majority of their constituents.
